How To Choose The Right Cleanser For Rosacea Prone Skin

Choosing the right cleanser for Rosacea prone skin could be one of the most important decisions you make in your battle against Rosacea.

Finding the right cleansers for rosacea can be a challenge, and there’s no quick fix.  In our battle to treat and control our rosacea we have to realize that we have to make some changes in our lifestyle and in our skin care routines.  However, don’t despair, these subtle changes will often make all the difference.

When you are diagnosed with rosacea, you have to make some simple changes in your daily skin care regimen and in your lifestyle.  As you probably know, certain things will most likely cause flare ups, such as smoking, alcohol, hot drinks, and spicy foods.

Some of these things may not affect your particular case of rosacea but some of them will – it’s very important to determine what causes your particular flare ups and focus on eliminating those things immediately.

It’s the same thing with cleansers for rosacea, you’re going to have to identify if your cleanser is triggering your break outs.  If you’re using a traditional cleansing product then chances are the answer is “yes”.

Conventional cleansers are made for “normal” skin and are generally too harsh for our skin.  For example, most women with rosacea shouldn’t be using a cleanser that contains soap.  That may go against everything that you were taught about keeping your face clean, but having rosacea means that we need to make some changes.

Using cleansers that are alcohol based or benzyl alcohol based is a big “no-no”.  In addition avoid the following ingredients:

  • glycolic acid
  • isopropyl palmitate
  • lactic acid
  • sodium hydroxide
  • propylene glycol.

If the cleanser you’re using has any of these ingredients it’s best to ditch it and move on.

If you’re big on using a toner as a cleanser that’s fine, just be sure to choose an alcohol free toner.  It’ll close your pores and keep them tight, while keeping your rosacea from flaring up.  Yay!

Keeping our skin clean is important to treating our rosacea, however we don’t want to be irritating, burning, and stinging our skin in the process — that is only going to make our condition worse.  There are great over the counter cleansers for rosacea, if in doubt, ask your local pharmacist to help you in your selection.  Avoid anything that stings, keep your skin clean every day, and eliminate your rosacea flare ups.
